This is one of the most often reasons why companies have an offsite - they want to build a tresor space to regain trustand communication.Strategy and AlignmentOffsites are invaluable for solving big problems or addressing long-term strategies. They allow leaders to spend time together collaborating, learning, and discovering new territories. By shaping the future together, people are more engaged and aligned.Learning and ExperimentingWhether you are trying to avoid lengthy approval mechanisms, increase accountability, improve self-awareness, or make meetings more efficient, an offsite provides a safe space for people to learn and experiment with new ways of working.Tackle large initiativesTaking time out of the office is a very effective way to focus on projects that require attention. The pre-work phase (interviews, surveys, etc.) provide valuable insights to better understand whats going on and bridge the gap between what management sees and what the team members observe.Acknowledge theres aproblemMost senior executives tend to minimize people or cultural issues - they are either too detached from the frontline or idealize the reality of their organization.This is hard for many executives to accept. I usually notice certain skepticism among leaders - their teams are more excited about the prospect of an offsite, but CEOs tend to be more hesitant. One of the reasons is that team retreats open many doors - not everyone is ready to listen or to feel exposed.However, tensions wont disappearbecause they are not addressed - they actually get worse.Plan Your Team OffsiteAheadWho ownsit?A team offsite involves a lot of planning and people. Usually, either leaders want to be in charge, or they delegate the authority to one person or small team. Our recommendation l ies in the middle.A diverse small group - the leader included - should be involved in the key design phases and approval - you dont want to kick off a session and realize that key people feel blindsided or that the CEO doesnt agree with the goals or agenda.Pre-workPreparing the team is vital without putting too much additional load on their shoulders. Sending out some pre-reads or exercises can help create curiosity.Usually, we perform a survey to assess the tensions and have some one-on-one interview with diverse team members to get a broad perspective of mindset, moods, and dig deeper into the tensions.The flowMost team retreats are very demanding in terms of attention and energy. Its key to mix activities to manage emotions and depth. For example, after an intense brainstorm, a stoke can relax people. Or a short guided meditation can bring some tranquility after activities that were more challenging or made people feel vulnerable.Having a clear agenda with planned activities a nd break is critical, but facilitators must be flexible to adapt to whats happening at the moment. This means probably spending more time in one section and sacrificing other portions - the outcome is more important than rigidly sticking to the agenda.To keep the energy flowing, group dynamics must change - switch partners, alternate sitting and standing activities, mix reflection with creative activities or switch the group settings.Plan small breaks for recovery, decompression, and bio needs. Make room for debriefing the activities - discuss learnings and address tensions.End on a high note. Review learnings and commitments. Createa celebratory team ritualto wrap up the session in a good mood.Write a teamcontractImproving team performance requires both individual and collective commitments. Signing a team contract is a fun and effective way to carve those in stone. Each person adds two post-its. One with a behavior s/he commits to improving the other, with one behavior s/he exp ects the team to provide. Then the entire team signs the contract.The follow-up is everythingDocument the process. Make sure to take lots of photos, capture insights and decisions - assign one person to consolidate everything after the session.Every offsite must include a concrete action plan with clear responsibilities. Set goals in theone day, one week, one monthformat (one day being the first day the team is back in the office).Set up a follow-up meeting (3060 minutes) to monitor performance and identify tensions - ideally, one week after the offsite.The facilitator should ensure the team is on track with commitments, keep the momentum going, and address new tensions associated with implementing new practices or habits.A Team Offsite Allows ExperimentationBuild a SafeSpaceThe whole process should be designed to make people feel comfortable to be themselves and take interpersonal risks. Of course, facilitation is key to create a safe space. But, every step sends a signal.Transpa rency and clear communication build trust. Share the purpose and desired outcome ahead of the offsite - if its meant to solve a particular issue, make it explicit, dont sugarcoat the problem.Make sure to keep pre-interviews or surveys confidential. I strongly recommend the results are shared during the session, in front of the entire team. When management sees the findings first, it creates the impression that results can be filtered or manipulated.Everyone plays with the samerulesI cant stress this enough leaders are part of the team. Thus, part of the problem. Dont behave like others have an issue, but you dont. Everyone has to be open to challenge and improve their mindsets and behaviors - leaders included.Ive seen many CEOs being an observer rather than an active participant. People are watching - your behavior can encourage or discourage them. Model the behavior you want them to practice. If you expect people to be more candid or creative, start by embracing your own vulnera bility first.Also, set up the room to ensuretitles dont get in the wayof honest conversations.The benefits of external facilitationCalling out certain behaviors or encouraging people to participate more, for example, become less personal when done by a third party. External facilitation provides a neutral perspective too.Unfortunately, not everyone in a team is trained in effective facilitation - running a training workshop, and an offsite are two different animals. An employee may bring his/her own biases to the session.Lastly, external facilitators can share tools and learnings from working with multiple teams across various organizations.Encourage ParticipationEnsuring everyone is listened - especially thevoices of quiet people - will increase participation. Senior executives, loud people, and men, in particular, tend to be more outspoken and inhibit or influence other participants thoughts.Clear ground rules, facilitation, and specific methods - like conversation turn-taking - are key to avoid someone from taking over.What Type of Offsite Is Right forYou?There are different types of team retreats depending on the challenges you are facing. This matrix will help you choose the right one.Reflection versus TransformationThe first type is about a deeper understanding of the teams mindset and behaviors - to reflect on performance and identify growth opportunities. FBI agents are called on to carry out complex operations in difficult and often dangerous circumstances, areas in which trb acquired valuable experience during his 2009-2013 military service.But like many applicants to the FBI, Matt didnt realize at first that preparing the specialized resume required for these vacancies would also be complex. The resume itself needs to demonstrate the organizational skills and detail orientation that FBI work requires, says Lisa Holm, a federal human resources consultant with The Resume Place.Theres a specific template that you have to follow when you write the FBI Special Agent resume, Lisa says. For starters, they want a summary meinung, professional skills, and a personal statement on how you approach work. Given his considerable skills and achievements in the Marines, Lisa was confident that Matt would make a strong candidate for FBI Special Agent if he could get the resume right. The draft resume that Matt had prepared on his own described his accomplishments in very generic terms. But the FBI resume must be very detailed for example, where the candidates training is described, they want the dates, credit hours earned, and where the training was conducted, Lisa says. So I said to Matt, these broad descriptions are notlage going to work, theyre looking for specific situations where youve used leadership skills.Lisa guided Matt through a process that would reveal and express Matts specific experiences in support of his claims of competency in key areas for the FBI Special Agent role.The result? In Matts original resume, for example, the Leadership section began As a noncommissioned officer, corporal of Marines, my mission was to ensure the overall success of any task and that my Marines were motivated in doing so. In Matts new resume, rewritten with Lisa, the Leadership section is much more specific and to the point. It starts Managed and motivated Marines to complete work assignments. While in transit to the Middle East for deployment, I had to be prepared for any hiccups that may arise. After flying out from North Carolina, my company landed in various airports where we had an un-certain amount of time before we would fly again. This was not because my command didnt know, but because it wasnt vital for juniorchefin Marines to know. I had to gain the mindset that I either had 10 minutes or 10 hours before orders were given. When I eventually landed in the country of Kyrgyzstan, I was told that it would be a week or so before we would travel to our destination. I took the time to use the bases gym where I could stay occupied and maintain my fitness. It was a relaxed environment, as to give the Marines a chance to stay stress free while in transit. I had the chance to explore the base with fellow Marines, workout, call home, and stay rested when our travel date arrived. A week and a half went by without further information so I continued in my daily routine of exercise, eating full meals, and staying rested. I had no choice but to stay flexible, so I embraced it. When the day came for my company to fly out, I was prepared and glad that I didnt sit around to wait for the news. AfterFlexibility / Adaptability When deployed, I often chose to be the first man in a patrol because I knew I had the attention to detail to detect dangerous situations. In one situation, I was sweeping for metallic objects when my metal detector beeped. I halted the patrol and alerted them to a possible improvised explosive device (IED). The Marine behind me verified that there were wires planted on the walkway. As a result of finding the IED, we had to alter our plans. A routine combat patrol turned into an overnight security operation where we set up a perimeter around the IED. Becau se of my training, I could adapt to the new plan for our patrol. COLLABORATIONBeforeI often relate to the saying, the loudest person in the room is also the weakest. No one wants to work with someone who is cocky and does not ask the opinions of others. I pride myself on listening first before I speak and it is necessary to remain humble when working with others so that all options can be reviewed. Interacting with other platoons and other leaders was part of my daily life and being able to communicate in a professional way leads to mission success. You have to remember who you are representing and that the outcome reflects on you.AfterI regularly partnered with other platoons and their leaders during training and tactical situations to monitor radio frequencies and maintain radio checks that guaranteed constant communication. During one deployment, I spent a week helping another platoon search vehicles and personnel. Though the personnel in the other platoon were of higher rank, I gained their trust and respect. As a result, a sergeant from the platoon later had me transferred to his platoon following the end of the deployment. He mentored and trained me, which led to my promotion to Corporal. Here are some tips to help your resume get past the ATS and into the hands of a hiring manager.Focus on Keyword Quality, Not QuantityATS do search for relevant keywords, but they also scan for keyword stuffing. An ATS is searching for specific words and does not account for any spelling mistakes. Even one error can cause the ATS to trash your resume so make sure you double, triple, quadruple check your spellingStick to Standard TitlesYou may think Professional Experience sounds better, but its best to stick to the basics when it comes to section titles. Use Work Experience instead of Professional Experience or Professio nal Profile.No Headers or FootersIt can be hard to fit everything you want to in a 1s)No Lines, No TablesAvoid breaking up your resume using tables (even if they have invisible borders) and lines that stretch across the page. At its core, an informational interview is a casual conversation between a job seeker and somebody who works at a company theyre interested in designed to help them gather intel on what its like working at the company and what opportunities they have available. But dont let the name fool you - informational interviews can do much more for you than just provide you with information. If you play your cards right, an informational interview can help get your foot in the door of the company youve got your eye on and eventually, may even help you land a job .Interested, but dont know where to start? Research everything you can about the company and the individual online in advance. Stay away from basic questions you can easily find out on your own. A few she recommends asking in particular are Make sure to stay engaged in what theyre saying - this information will give you a good idea of whether or not the company is even a good fit for you. You may even want to take notes to reference later if you decide to end up applying. Finally, Copeland advises that job seekers avoid common faux pas like directly asking for a job, dominating the conversation with information all about you, taking up too much of their time, and expecting the person to pay for their own lunch or coffee if they are meeting you at a restaurant.The heavy lifting is generally over once youve already met with somebody, but following up with them is key to ensuring that your informational interview proves fruitful. Sending a thank-you note within a day or so of y our meeting is key. As you would after an interview with a recruiter, make sure your note expresses gratitude for your interviewers time, appreciation for gaining more information and insight into the position and company, and enthusiasm/interest in working at the company.At this point, asking about open roles or recommendations is generally appropriate. However, you want to make sure you go about it in the right way - unless the person you spoke with is a full-time recruiter, filling open jobs at the company probably isnt their primary concern. To show proactivity on your part and demonstrate respect for their time, research open roles on the companys career site or Glassdoor page first to see what might be a good fit for you instead of simply asking them if they could tell you more about open roles. In your message, try saying something to the effect of I saw that your company is currently hiring for a Marketing Manager role. If you think Id be a good fit for the position, Id love if you could put me in touch with or mention my name to a recruiter If you cant find any open positions that seem like a good fit, though, you may just want to say something like It looks like there arent any positions that quite fit my experience and skills at the moment, but I hope you keep me in mind if something opens up Even if your informational interview doesnt directly lead to a recommendation or referral , though, dont stress - it doesnt mean you necessarily did anything wrong. As with many facets of job seeking, informational interviews can be a numbers game, where you have to go on a lot of them before anything concrete comes out of it. The good news? That kind of proactivity is exactly what you need to be successful in your job hunt - and with each informational interview you go on, youre that much closer to finding the position that fits your life.
